The Association of Minority Nephrologists (AOMN) was established in 1988 to help address the gross, under-representation of minority nephrologists in comparison to the percentage of minority patients with kidney disease and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Although nearly 30% of ESRD patients are Black, there are only slightly more than 100 Black nephrologists in the United States. The same discrepancy exists in the Hispanic and Native American communities. The AOMN has been dedicated to improving the health of all minorities.

The overall goals of the AOMN are to:

  • Enhance communication between minority nephrologists in both academics and private practice.
  • Encourage minority students and residents to enter the field of Nephrology.
  • Improve opportunities for minority nephrologists in both academics and private practice.
  • Increase awareness of risk factors for kidney disease in minority communities.
  • Advocate for national and international health care policies that include relevant provisions for minorities and disadvantaged populations.
  • Develop mechanisms for members to secure a financial base in the dialysis centers where they practice.
